So yesterday I got back from my trip to Yelagiri.
It was an awesome and fun-filled journey. A much awaited mini-vacation, celebrating our becoming Graduates.
I will post about the trip itself in a bit. Meanwhile, I have a lot of work to catch up on.

Bachelor of Engineering-Finally, a Graduate.

The Anna University Final semester B.E. results were published today(22/5/08). As expected, most students cleared all their current papers. With this, we are officially engineers. I wont get into the debate of whether we are engineers in the actual sense of the word or whether we are merely pseudo-engineers.To each his own.
Well, it is now that college life officially comes to an end. It is with mixed feelings that I am stepping out of the portals of college. Again, whether these 4 years have added anything meaningful to my life is a question over which I have to ponder. Yes, college has taught me a lot of things. Not merely academic, of course. However, I have been waiting for this moment for a long time and now that it is upon me, I do feel a little overwhelmed but nevertheless I am elated and feeling very liberated.
P.S. This post was composed on the 22nd but posted only today(26/5/08) since I had to push off to Yelagiri early the next day and my thoughts were not very coherent.

A grand affair
I attended the wedding of one of my Tam-Brahm relatives today.I have so much to say about wedding ceremonies, especially of the Tam-Brahm type.
I love them and yet I have a lot of interesting observations that I have made over the years. If I begin now, this post will go on for pages. So, I will post that for later.
Meanwhile, here is an interesting outlook on such weddings that I read sometime back: Link
You will be able to identify with it only if you have attended a Tam-Brahm wedding before.

IPL craze
I saw this recent news item on television. Either CNN-IBN or Times-Now. It seems the IPL season has hit the profits of the Bollywood films releasing during the same period. Tashan, Race,Krazzy4 are all flops and there are directors postponing their film releases, to avoid clashing with the IPL season.
Ditto the case with TV serials . SRK's much awaited 'Kya Aap Panchvi pass se tez hain?' has taken the hit as indicated by the slump in TRP ratings, just as is the case with other reigning soaps.
What could be the reason for this? Yes, the short format of the game has viewers hooked. Also, since it has teams within India competing against each other(with a lot of International players playing alonside Indian cricketers),it has further piqued the interest of cricket fans. Also, the glamour quotient can never be sidelined. This DLF IPL has brought together the film fraternity and the cricketing community. So, there is something for everyone.
Also, most of the films that flopped were damp squibs anyway. A good movie will always have people thronging the theatres or atleast appreciating it, irrespective of extraneous factors.

Weekend getaway

Planned a trip to Yelagiri with some friends. A 3 day weekend getaway. It is a hill station, about 4 hours by train from Chennai. Unlike Ooty or Kodai, it is less commercialized and hence we all can spend quality time together. Just soaking in the relaxed and serene life out there.
We have blocked rooms in a decent resort, since we don't intend on visiting too many spots but rather just chill out and relax . Not really interested in a packed schedule that'll have us panting and tired at the end of the day.A quiet weekend away from the heat and chaos called Chennai.
Treks, boating, bonfires. That is it.
Looking forward to the trip.

The silence of the lambs
Finally saw 'The silence of the lambs'. Been wanting to see it for a long time.More so , since I am a fan of the thriller genre of movies. The well made ones atleast. An awesome movie. Especially Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is mind blowing. Jodie Foster too gives an aptly restrained performance. I still get goosebumps when I visualize the scene where Lecter is shackled and taken to meet the senator. All through the first half of the film, Lecter seems perfectly normal, civil and cultured. In fact, it is difficult to imagine him to be the serial cannibalistic killer. The dialogues between Foster and Hopkins are engaging and delve into the psyche of the human mind. Especially, the quid pro quo repartees between Foster and Hopkins.
I'd recommend this movie to any avid movie watcher.

Late night wanderings? A strict no-no.
Recently, when guests were over and we were craving for a midnight snack, we took to the roads in search of any restaurant/cafe/eat out. Most shops down their shutters rather early here in Chennai. In fact, too early in my opinion.Driving around the roads , we found to our dismay that none of the shops were open late into the night. In fact, I think 11 P.M is the latest when one can find an assorted set of eat-outs in the Adyar/Besant nagar vicinity.
During my visits to Mumbai, we would go out for an ice-cream or chaat with my Aunt late at night and the entire shopping area would be abuzz with life. Not so here in Chennai. In fact, here we even spotted a couple of policemen lingering near the shops asking them to close down for the day.
The only place I could spot was Fruit Shop, but you don't get anything to eat there. Being a veg, my options are limited because I heard there is some really popular place near IIT where you get fast food. But I doubt I would have eaten there even otherwise.
Finally, ended up at CCD at IIT.To my surprise, it was pretty crowded and a lot of students were studying and completing assignments, all spread out on the table. Envy the IITians.
Chennai is still far behind other Indian cities. We have the regressive and conservative politicians and policy makers to blame. After all, the police force is only toeing their line.
