Recently, when guests were over and we were craving for a midnight snack, we took to the roads in search of any restaurant/cafe/eat out. Most shops down their shutters rather early here in Chennai. In fact, too early in my opinion.Driving around the roads , we found to our dismay that none of the shops were open late into the night.In fact, I think 11 P.M is the latest when one can find an assorted set of eat-outs in the Adyar/Besant nagar vicinity.
During my visits to Mumbai, we would go out for an ice-cream or chaat with my Aunt late at night and the entire shopping area would be abuzz with life. Not so here in Chennai.In fact, here we even spotted a couple of policemen lingering near the shops asking them to close down for the day.
The only place I could spot was Fruit Shop, but you don't get anything to eat there. Being a veg, my options are limited because I heard there is some really popular place near IIT where you get fast food. But I doubt I would have eaten there even otherwise.
Finally, ended up at CCD at IIT.To my surprise, it was pretty crowded and a lot of students were studying and completing assignments, all spread out on the table. Envy the IITians.
Chennai is still far behind other Indian cities. We have the regressive and conservative politicians and policy makers to blame. After all, the police force is only toeing their line.

12 0 clock ..best place ascendas...
Ascendas is now closed to outsiders after 11 P.M.
gosh thats the worst news i have ever heard...
Well, I don't know really. We are supposed to have our last meal for the day between 8 and 9. :)
So, I don't really see why we require restaurants to be open after that.
I wouldn't blame the politicians and policy makers. Most people don't go out after midnight and shopkeepers got to sleep too.
Don't compare Mumbai with Chennai. Shiv Sena makes policies there. :)
Haha, Karthik. Some of your naive comments make me laugh out loud really.
Just bcos you have your last meal between 8 and 9, does not mean everyone else does. Have you not heard of ppl working late night shifts and catching a late dinner?
Also, have you not heard of shops/restaurants functioning in 8hr shifts(soln to ur concern on the shopkeeper being deprived of his sleep)?Have you not heard of all night cafes? A lot of students even stay up late at night studying after which go out for dinner.
For instance, Kausik( above) and his blogger fellows hold unconferences and bloggers' camps late into the night. So they need something to keep them going during these sessions, you see.
What about tourists/visitors arriving in the city late at night and wanting to compensate for their missed dinner? Not everyone likes airport food, mind you.No option, again.
Ah, Naive of me indeed for having said supposed, which totally indicates that just bcos I have my last meal (and not just of the day) between 8 and 9 means everyone else does. No ROFL ?
People working late shifts should have food at their work place just as we have cabs.
Restaurants working 8 hour shifts will have to employ three times the people and hence pay that much more. Why would I want that ?
Well, I don't stay up late at night studying.(Or, at all for that matter.) So I haven't heard of all-night-cafes.
Agreed there is a niche segment of people who have an active night life and yes, if I was one among them, I'd like food at night as well. But that doesn't mean everyone keeps their stores open for you. You need to have thought about it in advance and made your own arrangements.
As for visitors, tourists, they need to get a taste of India afterall. :) (Either by eating the airline food or by missing their one days meal.)
@karthik:
buddy!! no arguments, case rested. go sleep now its 12 in the night ...and i will probably go out and grab a midnight snack and some coffee...
@Kaushik,
I was probably asleep already. :) (Half asleep when I commented) and guaranteed asleep when you did.
I shouldn't be pointing out small details, but it's hard to imagine people having a midnight snack at 9 in the morning. ;) (Just a joke.)
But then yea, no arguments. :D
not if you are night now in the U.S. of A mate...
but yeah you are right i am not from there :(
Australia maybe ? :D
